The sweet Muscat of Samos is one of Greece's most famous wines — a golden, honeyed treasure that has been prized since antiquity. But when it comes to actually buying a bottle, most people have questions: which style should I choose? Sweet or dry? How do I serve it, and how do I make sure I'm getting the real thing? This is our practical, no-nonsense guide to choosing and buying Muscat of Samos, from a deli and wine bar in the heart of Pythagorion.
Curious about the island's winemaking past? Read our companion piece on the rich history of Samos wine. Here, we focus on what's in the glass — and how to buy it.
What makes Muscat of Samos special
Muscat of Samos is a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) wine, made from the aromatic Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains grape grown on the terraced slopes of Mount Ampelos. The island's combination of altitude, sea breezes and old-vine tradition gives the wine its signature intensity: orange blossom, apricot, honey and dried fruit. Much of the production is centred on the historic growers' cooperative, the Union of Vinicultural Cooperatives of Samos (E.O.S.).
The styles — and how to choose
Not all Samos Muscat is the same. Knowing the styles is the key to buying the right bottle:
- Vin Doux Naturel (sweet) — the classic. Fermentation is stopped by adding grape spirit, keeping the wine lusciously sweet and aromatic. Perfect with dessert, blue cheese, or simply on its own. If you want the “iconic Samos” experience, start here.
- Fortified / aged styles — richer, deeper, with notes of caramel and dried fruit from extended ageing. A wine to sip slowly.
- Dry Muscat — increasingly popular, showing the grape's floral aromatics in a crisp, refreshing style. A lovely aperitif and a surprise for anyone who only knows the sweet version.

How to serve & taste it
Serve sweet Muscat well chilled, around 8–10°C, in a small white-wine glass. Sweet styles pair beautifully with desserts, dried fruit and nuts, strong or blue cheeses, and even foie gras; dry Muscat shines as an aperitif or alongside light seafood and salads.
